I would like to know how the selected shipping method in a web shop (e.g. shopify) is related to the different carriers that can be created in tryton. Is there a way to synchronize these?

Not yet.
Indeed the complexity comes that by design Shopify could have multiple shipping lines but by default Tryton has a single carrier.
I guess we could add the carrier_identifier from Shopify to the Tryton’s carrier to make the link. And with Carrier Carriage Module we could support multiple carriers.
But for now Tryton set its first available carrier.
