Serial Numbers on Products and Stock Moves

I am talking about traceability with lots and serial numbers. For what else would you need serial numbers and lots if not for traceability?

Of course lot is for traceability but it is the first level. It tracks just the lot.
If you want to add the production tracebaility (when some lots are merged in a new lot), we need to have a view like discussed here: Redirecting to Google Groups

I think that here we are confusing part number with serial number:

Part number is the one that would track the product models or manufacturing processes. (Example: Notebook models)

No, this is clearly a product (or variant) with a product code

Serial number is unique for each item and it can not be reused. (Example: Mobile IMEI)

Here the argumentation is about the fact that serial number or lots are the same. It is only a matter of limitation on the quantity.
